How KMC students advocate for life

According to reproductiverights.org, Kansas has now become a hub for abortion for the Midwest. Abortion is one of the most controversial issues of this day and students at Kapaun Mt. Carmel have been fighting against abortion for years.

“The topic of abortion is one of the most polarizing issues in our society,” Crusader for Life sponsor Jose Morales said. “The debate is typically highlighted in politics – usually the conservatives are very anti-abortion and the liberals are very pro-abortion. The reality, however, is that abortion is not simply a political issue, it is a human rights issue that affects people of all ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic groups.”

The Crusader for Life club at KMC helps bring the abortion issue to light.

“The Mission of Crusaders for Life is to foster a greater awareness of the dignity of the human person from conception to natural death at Kapaun Mt. Carmel through student outreach on campus and works of mercy alongside the pro-life community,” Morales said.

Club members create awareness by making posters and going to different events to spread more awareness throughout the community. They hosted the Life Chain in October, which had a turnout of more than 100 people. The March for Life in Washington, D.C. is another event where students can rally against abortion.

“The March for Life just put into perspective how many people care about the innocent lives that are killed by abortion,” said senior Elizabeth Rambo, who attended the march in 2026. “It made me realize how important it is to stand up for the lives that can’t stand for themselves.”

Crusader for Life activities include praying for an end to abortion and listening to guest speakers who share their perspectives on abortion.

“We also host speakers that help us connect to pregnancy care centers and other organizations that serve the homeless community or the elderly,” Morales said. “We also pray in front of abortion facilities and try to provide important information about the destructive nature of abortion to women who are seeking to have abortions.”

Abortion is a particularly relevant issue for high school students because of its real-world impact on their lives and the lives of those around them, senior vice president Grace Alhzem said.

“It’s important for high school students to talk about it,” Alhzem said. “Since they are the future of the world and they have the most control over what happens next. The students in Crusaders for Life are so motivated to fight for the cause and to find the solution.”

The topic of abortion is so controversial that it has become one of the hottest topics in America, but Morales wants students to not be scared of the truth.

“I hope students will open their minds so as to realize that abortion is truly a crime against humanity because it breaks at least two hearts, the heart of the mother and the heart of the child,” Morales said. “I hope students will grow in their understanding of how dangerous and traumatic abortions are and that there is never a ‘safe abortion.’”
